Finno-Balkan Voices comprises two groups of singers, the Finnish
group Mamo (www.soundcloud.com/mamovocals) and
the Vaya Quartet (www.vayaquartet-bg.com/index.html)
from Bulgaria. Together, they form a line-up which combines two strong singing
traditions. Their repertoire includes folk songs, commissioned
pieces and songs written by the members of the ensemble. Eight
unique voices combine to form an unusual and beautiful sound.
The idea for Finno-Balkan
Voices came from Emmi Kujanpää. During her studies in the Plovdiv Academy of
Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Bulgaria in 2009, she had a vision to combine the
vocal traditions of Bulgaria and Finland. Since 2010, when the ensemble
was founded, the singers have performed in both Finland and Bulgaria with great
success. From the very beginning, Finno-Balkan Voices have been working
together with Professor Dora Hristova, a legend of Bulgarian choral music.
